It was fun to see a picture of mine in today's edition of USA TODAY. The article features my nephew who has a condition called Cold Urticaria and was featured with my photos in the MAYO HEALTH magazine recently. The story was later picked up by USA Today and can be seen HERE. It's an interesting concept--- a boy living in MN who is allergic to cold!? The story has gotten a lot of feedback and it looks like there are many other people who have symptoms of this same condition. It's not just an allergy to cold- but to any drastic temperature change- and therefore even going into an overly air conditioned building after being outside in the summer, or guzzling a very cold soda too fast can result in the hives or at worst case scenario- anaphylactic shock.
Luckily Grant and his family are learning how to manage the disorder and I think they will be sticking around MN for a while.
I took a variety of pictures for the USAToday article- they requested something outdoors in the snow--- and ultimately chose the one of the boys standing that you see in the article.
A shout out to my friend, Paula Swift of Paula Swift Photography for helping me learn a little more about the photography process of news articles and assisting me with the print and press release contract. Not something I do everyday, so it was nice to have some help from this amazing portrait photographer who spent the beginning of her career as a photo journalist and has had her work published in a variety of publications, including The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Times, Time, Newsweek, USA Today, and Esquire. I've been meaning for some time to post images of the wall display at Dr. Roggow's Dentist Office-- I've gotten so many nice comments on the way it turned out. Many thanks to Dr. Roggow and staff for requesting a little face lift to their reception room. The display contains a few images of some of their clients (and mine). We both share a common cause----SMILES are important to us both! :)

Photography is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies. It's the age where every moment of our lives and our children's lives are being captured in images and video and preserved. It's becoming a fast growing profession as well. There are probably many "Open For Business" signs going up this week from all those that received their new camera for Christmas last week. So in a sea of photography options, it's becoming more and more important to not only examine your options for portraits, but to examine what you want to capture in your images when you decide to have your portraits done.

Photography is an art and each artist has a different style, so be sure to look at the photographer's portfolio and work. Many photographers have websites or blogs that are easily accessible on the web. Does the artist's style match what you are hoping to capture in your family's portraits? Be sure to look for more than one image from a session to demonstrate the artist has the consistency and skill to produce many quality images from a session versus one or two nice shots.

Be leery of the artist who can be everything to everybody. Do they specialize in weddings, seniors, newborns, engagements, couples, pets, children, newborns, reunions, and bar mitzvahs? Do they offer traditional portraiture, candid photography, natural light photography, studio light photography, and photojournalistic photography? While I'm happy when my clients come to me with confidence in my abilities to shoot whatever they want, the greatest compliment are those that call having seen my website, are familiar with my style and confirm it matches what they are wanting for their images. I'm not hesitant to refer clients to a photographer that better matches their needs if they are looking for a style that I think would be better matched by someone else. Photography certainly isn't a one- size- fits- all profession.

Having a friend do your portraits? That might be a perfect option for you- if you know what to expect. I recently had someone tell me how disappointed they were in some preschool pictures that were done of their son. I asked if they were "discount priced" and she responded that she considered them MORE expensive considering they were useless to her and paying any amount was too much for something she would never use or look at again. In addition to that, her son's birthday had passed and she was left without any images from his 3 year old pictures .

I came across this IMAGE recently and thought it was a telling image- that shows a little of what goes into a quality professional portrait session. Posing is one element of a portrait session that really impacts the final result of your images. A bend of a joint in a certain way can elongate the torso and eliminate love handles. A turn in a different direction can help hide a thick neck. Understanding light - finding it, molding it, seeing and understanding shadows and highlight and how they flatter (or unflatter).

Focal length, lens selections, lighting, angle and composition can also add to an image that will flatter (or un-flatter) you. After the images are taken, the final editing done by the artist is yet another element that results in a professional final image. Things like skin softening, under-eye touch ups and other finishing touches are something that will vary from artist to artist and is something that should be compared when choosing a photographer.

Consider these elements in addition to budget when choosing your photographer to get results that you will be proud to show off.

What's your 'PHOTOGRAPHIC" New Year's resolution? To catch up on your 15 year olds scrapbook which left off at the first day of Kindergarten? To organize all those digital pictures? How about putting the old 35mm film negatives in a safety deposit box?
With 2012 hanging around the corner- there is plenty of photo resolutions I've been thinking about.

1. Take more 'everyday' pictures.
Capture what life is really like in your house. Don't worry about the pile of dirty dishes in the sink in the background (hey, that's life, right? - at least in my house it is) Capture those ho-hum everyday moments that seem mundane, but is a little time capsule of life as you know it. This is a goal I'm working on personally. Forget about the perfect picture. Forget about the perfect lighting. Capture the moment. I practiced this goal a few weeks ago when my daughter and toddler son fell asleep snuggled in my bed. I didn't want to disturb them by turning on the lights, so I cranked the ISO on my camera and ended up with a grainy, terribly noisy snapshot...that is 'perfect'.

2. Organizing those photos
I've got a great workable system for all my client photos. I've got externals and folders with in folders organizing my workflow from images straight out of the camera to edited to proofs to resizes and web images. In fact I just patted myself on my back with a client requested to purchase a disc of images from her 2006 session and I located it within a couple minutes. SO WHY are my own personal images not organized so well? Sometimes I seriously consider buying a 35 mm film camera and go to the days when I can take one shot, develop the film and keep the negatives in a box and feel organized. Of course, I'm still very miffed at the lab that lost the film from my oldest child's first birthday party...but that is a whole nother story.
if you need a better system like I do- you might find this link helpful. Of course- the hardest part of this resolution is actually implementing it...but I encourage you to do so!
ORGANIZING TIPS

3. Apocalypse Prediction
No, I am not talking about the Mayan prediction of the end of the world in 2012- but you might feel that way if your computer with all your digital photos on it bites the dust. They say it's a matter of WHEN- not IF- and I can vouch for that. Last year about this time I had not only an external hard drive failure, but the 'back up' to the hard drive failed as well and I lost years of personal photos. Hospital and birth images of my children, birthdays, etc. It cost me (let's just say a lot) to recover the drive- but truth be told I was happy to pay it to have the images back.
So put at the top of your resolution list to get a back up system in place. Save important (all) images in 2-3 places and at least one off site location. There are various internet backup sources that offer this service at a fairly reasonable price.

4. PRINT it!
Another area of 'need' for me is to PRINT those pictures. Do you take a hundred photos at an event and fail to print even one?
Thinking that day will come. Well, the day is today. Print, baby print. I think about the fun of growing up and grabbing the shoe box or tattered album from the closet that contained snapshots of my childhood, or shots of my home farm and how it looked before I was born, and the entertainment that box of images offered. If you don't print some images, your pictures are living their 'full life".

5. DELETE it!
That's right- you heard me. DELETE IT. You don't need 15 pictures of Suzy smelling that flower. Pick the best one and delete the rest. Remember the days of film when taking a pictures actually 'cost' film? You had to be a little particular about the shot and make it count. Well- in the days of digital, snap away if you like, but keeping multiple images of the same thing bog you down space wise and organizationally as well. Pick the best- purge the rest.

6. PUT the camera DOWN!
Seems a funny tip from a photographer- doesn't it? But I'm taking this advice myself more and more. I long ago tried to force myself to not have to lug my 'nice' camera to every event because sometimes I found by the time I got home I realized I felt like I spent the whole time trying to take pictures and I only 'saw' my child's performance thru the lens of a camera. So the fancy camera stays home- I'll throw in the point and shoot and I don't need a pictures of every move my kid makes. Snap a photo and then put the camera down and ENJOY the moment. See it through the lenses of your eyeballs.

So Happy New Year and Auld Lang Syne to you and yours. Make 2012 your year to accomplish those photographic resolutions!

Taking advantage of vacation to catch up on some blog posts. This is such a great family and the kids are delightful. I think I can visualize images from each of their sessions in the last few years...from the oldest brother's serious toddler portraits to middle daughter's fantastically crazy hair as an infant- and baby brothers big brown eyes under the little newspaper boy's hat. One advantage of doing portraits for a family thru the years is the chance to get to know the parent's style and artistic eye. I know mom appreciates the more spontaneous shots...images of the siblings hanging out and being friends, or sharing a quiet moment together. I also appreciate their willingness to go along with my own crazy ideas- like, "Hey- let's do a family picture with an old yellow tire!". The kids really enjoyed visiting the lake and the spontaneous shot from behind of them pointing at the fish that showed up at the surface is my favorite from the session.

It's always a pleasure to work with Mr. Ashton and his family. Mom and dad and are sweet as can be and Ashton was a little apprehensive this year. You'd never guess it tho- just look at those smiles! WIth a little warm up time and some silly songs and faces and a few games in between shots, he warmed up just fine to the idea of pictures. I've always had a thing for brown eyes tho-- and he has some beautiful ones. :)

Mallory brought a few of her musical instruments for her shoot- a few days before she participated with her clarinet as one of the youngest students in the Iowa All State Band in Ames, Iowa. There's no doubt she is a talented young lady. Not only did we feature some of her musical instruments, but some of her sports gear from Okoboji High. GO PIONEERS! I've been utilizing the chalk board more lately and clients and I are loving the results.

Charlee | Newborn Photography MN

Meet Charlee. I love the name and the spelling for this little angel. We even considered Charley for our little Holden. :) Babies change so quickly and so it's so important to document these days that you think you will never forget...but soon find yourself looking back and thinking, "Were they ever so small- really!?" It's also a great time for a portrait with mom and baby. Though sometimes mom's are hesitant, it's an invaluable keepsake for the baby book and for your baby to look back on and see just how they made mom's eye's smile.

Boys, Boys, Boys (and Boys) | SW MN Family Photography

The focus of this session was getting the family portrait and holiday card shots. Once we got that accomplished, mom requested some images of the boys being BOYS! The boys were more than willing to have some fun in the leaves. We usually have snow covering the ground in MN this time of year, so it was a rare opportunity to have some fall fun in November. I didn't see til editing that the littlest boy has his tiny toe sticking out of his sock in the one where he is flat on his back enjoying the fun. As a mother of two boys I can contest that they don't make socks to last!

I told mom this was the easiest session cooperation wise yet. Last time I told her that she announced she was pregnant with No. 4. So we'll see if I get any news in a few months! ;)

Newborn Jack | Fairmont Newborn Photography

Baby Jack is tiny and sweet and just shy of two weeks old when he and his mommy and daddy came to visit. I've had the opportunity to photograph big sisters and they are all such a sweet and fun family.
Everytime we shifted him, Jack just seemed to think, "Why don't these people leave me alone so that I can sleep!" Those newborn images are so precious, and I'm sure that he has changed already in this short time.

If you are interested in newborn photograph's, please schedule your session prior to baby's birth, and we can finalize the date/time once he or she makes their appearance. The best time to shoot newborns is before 10 days old.

My nephew, Grant is going to be featured in an upcoming issue of Mayo Health Magazine. He was diagnosed last year with a disorder called Cold Urticaria, which causes his skin to welt and blister if he gets too cold- and at worse case scenerio could lead to anaphylactic shock. It's not easy to maintain a warm temperature at all times when you live in MN! Even just swimming can be risky. I had the opportunity to shoot Grant and his family for some images to be published in the magazine- so while there, we got some family and sibling shots as well.

It's always nice to have a little inspiration to get the wheels turning. I am brainstorming how to use the new images I took of my own three to make a new arrangement in my dining room. One good think about decorating with portraits of your loved ones...you never have regrets once they are up and hung and you can stand back and admire the view. (Unlike that shade of lavender paint in the bathroom that looks like Viking Purple!

Any day now. Any minute now! Baby 3 will make his or her appearance with two big brothers anxious to welcome the little bundle.
I wanted to add a little bit of casual fun to this session, after all, pregnancy is such a fun time, filled with expectations (and who are we kidding, lots of anxiety as well) but it's a once in a lifetime event and mom wanted to capture this last pregnancy- as well as the brother's excitement about the event. According to mom, "they are ALL about the belly!"

These brothers seem to fit right in the outdoors surrounding~ and the colors set off their handsome smiles.
The beautiful colors are fading and I'm afraid will soon give way to some cold weather. This fall I was fortunate to get lots of outdoor sessions in- but the big step of flipping the studio air conditioning to heat has been made and indoor family sessions are in swing! I don't know where the time has gone- but there are limited sessions remaining until my holiday cut off of November 15th. Christmas cards are arriving daily in orders and it's starting to put me in the holiday spirit! :)

It's been a whirlwind of last minute outdoor sessions, senior portraits and holiday cards at the studio, but I wanted to share a quick favorite series of images from a recent session. This brother and sister combo were so adorable and since I've been photographing them since she was an infant, it's always interesting to see how they grown and change- as well as how every year the sessions get increasingly easier as their patience and cooperation level increases too. There is something special about that brother/sister relationship and I think this series of images captures that special bond.

"You must have a ton of pictures of your own children! " I get that all the time. I do enjoy my job, but truth be told there is nothing harder than photographing one's own children when you're a photographer. There's this imaginary pressure in my head to get the perfect shot. To do something different. Frankly I felt that way more years ago- now I've moved on to what I hear some of my clients say after a less than satisfying experience after pictures elsewhere...'ALL I WANT IS ONE GOOD PICTURE!"

That was pretty much my attitude as last Sunday my husband and I threw the kids in the van after I decided about 5 minutes before today might be the only weekend I have to attempt their portraits for holiday cards. Forget the bath. Forget the primping. Wipe the cheetoh's off your face and we're good to go.

I had a garage door in an alley all picked out and unfortunately a pickup was blocking the shooting area...so on to plan B. (Because I'm not getting everyone dressed again a different day) So a suitable spot was picked and now the real fun begins.

My oldest two children are pretty self sufficient now. They can do what their told, they usually cooperate. I've got it made- right? Add in Mr. Holden at 19 months and it's a whole new box of wax.
He can walk away (and he does).
He can scowl (and he does)
He can express his total uniterest in the whole process (and he does.)

NOW add in my 484 month old- also knows as spouse.

If you think it's hard to get YOUR husband to COME get family portraits done, just imagine the joy of trying have him assist you with one of the most stressful jobs- taking pictures of your own children. I guess I need not elaborate much more on that...suffice it to say that I won't be hiring him for a studio assistant anytime soon.

So- I'm determined to make these images 'work'. I have to be in the right frame of mind to work on images of my own children, especially the ones of the three of them together (can you say headswap/major editing more than likely). But here are a few favs that I worked up.

Of course the oldest had to show off their planking skills- which is such a fabulous pose for children's portraits. :) Why didn't I think of that? I didn't even think they knew what planking was!

Ms. M | 2 year old portraits

She's two! She's cute...she's precocious, she is a mommy's girl! I know mom was a little nervous how Madyson would do for her 2 year old portraits, and it did take some warm up time and I pulled out almost (not quite) every trick in my bag of tricks...but I'm more than satisfied with the images of Madyson's session. I totally love the grey and yellow shirt that just seems to pop with the fall colors. Could she be any cuter!? " Are all two year olds like this," mom wondered. Frankly- most of them, yes. Two can be a hard age to photograph. As I told mom, two year old sessions involve a good amount of psychology to read the child and know what approach is going to be the best to achieve the best images. Different posing techniques that allow her to stay semi-close to mom for reassurance, yet yield beautifully lit portraits are always in the back of my mind when working with the wonderful world of two year olds. The only thing worse is being a photographer AND a mother to a two year old..... pictures of my own son...OH so much more difficult! Thanks for sharing all your cuteness, Ms. M!

More Family Portraits | LAKEFIELD MN PHOTOGRAPHER

This was my first time shooting this adorable family from Windom, MN. They have a pair of delightful daughters and the cutest twin sons. I admit, I couldn't tell them apart, during pictures or during editing, but I was smart enough during the session to pose them different directions so I could have some organization during my editing. Like a lot of children, the boys were a little hesitant at first but once they warmed up they were outgoing little chatterboxes. They must keep their big sisters awfully busy!

I had to laugh when Brooklyn came prancing in my studio- rearing to go for her portraits. It wasn't long before her ambitious attitude started to wane, but luckily her photogenic brother could switch off with her in his stylin linen suit. All it took was a big bouquet of colorful balloons to perk Brooklyn back up again. Mom even joined in a for a few!

Hi- I'm Nicholas | Newborn Photography SW MINNESOTA

He's adorable and sweet and at 9 days old Nicholas joined me for his very first portrait session. If you're familiar with my work, you know I recommend newborns come for their sessions at 10 days or younger. This will sway the chances in your favor that baby will be more sleepy and cooperative. Once baby is even a little older, they are not as "bendy" (is that a word?) and while the images you get will still be precious- you may not get the sleepy squishy baby poses that are so popular with newborn sessions. I've also found sessions with younger newborns tend to go quicker and involve less crying from baby and mom. Ok, just kdding on that mom thing...but trust me- the younger the better. :)

While I was doing Nicholas' portraits, I realized the other very important factor in achieving some of these images- is the parents.
This isn't the first time I've worked with Nicholas' parents as he has a big brother Nathan. It helps to have that level of trust from mom and dad as you're molding their baby into some poses that seem a little awkward at first.

Nicholas is just as cuddly and snuggly as he looks. Congratulations to mom, dad and new brother. He is a keeper!

What an awesome family! This was the first time I had the privilege of shooting this family, but mom greeted me with a hug like an old friend. I LOVED their outfits and the PURPLE splashes of color. How fun, not to mention it gave me another opportunity to use my purple velvet chair. The children we just as cute as could be and it was hard to pick just a few to share, but here are a few of my personal favs!

Arianna was fantastic to work with, she was up for anything and was carefree and relaxed when it came to being willing to try anything when it came to make-up or clothing or posing. I love that! I love the hair accessories and how they add a little extra color and interest to the images.

If you're planning for your own senior session, keep in mind the following tips:
1. Even if you're not a 'make-up' person....a little foundation, blush and lipgloss will go a long way to making your portraits look finished and not overly done.

2. Shorts and short dresses will somewhat limit the posing that you can do-therefore, be sure your portrait wardrobe consists of other clothing options that is less limiting.

3. Layering clothing with vest, jackets,hats, scarves, etc adds interest and is a great way to add variety to your images.

4. Don't forget jewelry and hair pieces to add interest as well.

Saturday was a whirlwind day of beautiful senior girls, make-up, hair-do's and lots of fun. I headed up with friend and fellow photographer, Kari Mertz of Kari Mertz Photography and we took a group of our 2012 Senior Models for a fun destination model shoot in downtown Sioux Falls, SD. We prepared for the session by assisting our models in picking out clothing from their wardwrobe prior to the shoot and were assisted by make-up artist Amanda of a very scrumptious wedding blog, Wedding Cheesecake, and make-up artist Alexis Kolb of Sioux Falls, SD. We were reminded again just what an impact clothing selection and make-up can make in the final product- great images! Needless to say we had a blast scouting fun locations with great lighting and backgrounds to fit the feel of clothing and the look we were striving for. These little cuties are a joy to photograph. They are truly miracle babies and it's an honor document their advances by leaps and bounds as well as Thomas's joyful personality and belly laughs as his daddy sings silly songs to make him laugh (don't worry Mike, I dont' have it on hidden video) and Julia's reserved personality until she got into the model mode and let her big beautiful eyes smile as big as her mouth.

This is a favorite image, not only because of their gorgeous eyes ( I love how T's are deep brown and J's are bright blue) but because of the way Julia is holding Thomas' hand. I think, knowing their story, that tells a story in itself.

Portraits are a great way to not only document the changes and growth of your children and family, but to use a checkpoint of their individual interests at that particular time. Besides doing sibling shots, we also did a few shots of Jordan with something that kept him occupied for a lot of the summer....baling hay! He may not always look back so fondly on the job down the road, but for now farming tasks like that are more fun than work. We captured Emma with some flowers for her pre-teen portraits and Elena wasn't shy about wanting to get in on the action and show her spunky personality either! We started out doing some First Communion Portraits...and mom wanted some images of Josh in his wrestling singlet (is that how you spell that?!) as well. So we literally started out straight laced and then Josh 'broke out' in all his wrestling glory! Sorta like Superman or Super-Wrestler Man incognito. (I don't THINK he normally wears his singlet under his suit to Mass - LOL)

The photo-keepsake tins continue to be a popular item- and I love them as well. Mom plans to keep special keepsakes in it thru the years.

Little Brother 2

It's not easy being the little brother, but Joshua takes his role as the baby of the family with a big smile on his face. He's not one that holds that smile back and that just makes my job a bit easier to capture images of this adorable angel. Thanks to mom and dad for bringing Joshua in for his ONE YEAR portrait! Where did that year go? As a baby planner, Joshua will be receiving a 10x20 storyboard panel featuring one image of each of his sessions from the past year to show his growth from infant to toddler.
It's such a special transition that seems to just pass at the speed of light. Happy Birthday, Joshua!

Independence Day!

It's Independence Day- one of my favorite holidays as a child- and I still enjoy the tradition of the the Okabena parade and games in the park, ballgames and getting a chance to run into old friends. I have an "ALL ABOUT ME" poster from Kindergarten where I state the 4th was my favorite holiday because I got to go to the park and drink 7-Up. I guess it didn't take much to make me happy. :)

Playing catch up on the blog lately to get a few peeks of completed sessions up. It seems there isn't enough time in the day to get it all done- but that's the way it always goes, isn't it!? Stevie is a celebrity of sorts around town, her mom and dad own the local gym and I get lots of compliments on the beautiful wall portraits they have of Stevie displayed in their business. We did a family portrait with a twist for their last session and included Otis (the dog, not the dad) and the final result was cool, hip and fun, just like their family!

Little Ms. Briley is full of style, independence and sass and I just loved the outfits that mom brought that really showed off her personality. One thing you can always predict about little girls this age is that they are UNpredictable. You never know if you're going to get smiles and cooperation or pensive looks of independence (or tears?!) Briley gave me a lot to work with and an opportunity to try out some new backgrounds as well.

I am so honored with clients, like Briley's mom come a distance and make it a point to schedule their sessions while they are in the area. This last month I had sessions with people from North Dakota, Nebraska, South Carolina and next week I'll be shooting a family visiting from West Virginia! Thank you for taking time out of your vacation plans to allow me to capture your family portraits.

Oh my--- it's been way too long. My poor blog is poorly neglected. What's my excuse? Busy with session- YES. Busy with baby- Yes! Writer's Block-YES! But the best way to get back on the horse is just to delve right in-or so I hope!

I'm going to re-start off with a beautiful gal from a recent senior session that we got in right under the wire for the 2011 senior deadlines.

It's no secret there are lots of options out there for senior pictures...everything from pro's, to a friend with a fancy camera to your mom snapping a few her cell phone and calling it good! If you're still in the decision mode of figuring out what do to for your senior portraits- I recommend an article written by friend and fellow photographer, Natural Impressions -Photography by Justine. She gives some great pointers on things to consider. Check it out HERE.

Kenley- Baby Plan Graduate

Kenley is graduating! Graduating from the Portrait Baby Plan that is! It's so fun to watch these little ones changes from their 3 month session when they are bobbley head cuties to the six month when they are able to give you a genuine smile. Then the 9 month (one of my favs) where they can sit and interact, to the final session of the plan..the 12 month - "LOOK AT ME!" session.

Sofia's costume arrived today and so we quickly assigned tonight as picture night and captured a few images of her in her beautiful get up (I think this costume might be my favorite to date!) I think the set is going to work nicely to set off all the variety of costumes and colors. I hope you'll like it as well as I do!

I love shooting this family. It's hard to believe that their son is 5, I can vividly remember shooting his newborn portraits and what a tiny little thing he was. One of the great things about doing photography is the connection I've built with people - and the ability it gives me when shooting their images in subsequent sessions. It gives me a feel for the type of images they like, how they want to use them, etc. Knowing mom and her daughter, I suggested they bring some purses and a gear for a special diva type of portrait for little Ms. B. I love the images we got- SUCH FUN!

The weather on Sarah's senior picture day gave us temperatures just warm enough to take a few outdoors in the new fallen snow.
It's not hard to see that Sarah is a natural in front of the camera. Hello 2011

What? My blog! It's still here? Despite being neglected and close to abandoned- it is still here waiting for me to log in and jot a line or two about life, photography, or whatever. It's true- the longer I've put it of the harder it's gotten to get back in the groove.
First my excuse was a fabulously busy senior picture season- which was followed by the family portrait and Christmas card sessions rush. I was sure once things slowed down when I took time off in December I would get things up to date- post some by-gone session images, write some brilliantly informative (yet humorous posts) all while rearing my three children, the youngest of whom is going for the record of being the oldest baby to not sleep through the night (let alone a straight 4 hours) and may possibly be the only child to go Kindergarten unweaned. I'd sort of like to write the Le Leche League hate mail-- but I digress.

Why is it- every December- when I plan to take a few weeks off to catch up/plan ahead and relax my computer takes a nosedive.
Well, once again this December the ole PC pushed me to my limits and I bit the bullet and went MAC. So now I"ve got a bit of a learning curve to get thru, but I'm hoping this puts a final end to my PC headaches.

BUT---- I am excited to share my first baby shoot of 2011- Mr. Joshua! The scale image is one of my favorites and Mr. J's mamma is always so willing to allow me to play and try new props/poses and lighting out with him that he's a joy to work with.

Thanks for letting me share some of my work with you- no matter how sporadic sometimes it may be.

Timeless Vintage Photographs

My nephew (who has a great eye by the way) shared a link with me that he thought I would enjoy. He was right. And I wanted to take a minute to share it with you- in case you have an appreciation of history and photography. I've seen similar images in black and white or sepia, - which are interesting of course, but it's amazing how when it's in color it really seems to make that connection between what seems like such a long time ago and makes it relate more directly to our world today. I love seeing the people's clothing in colors of the 40's (notice that first lady's flour sack apron) and the vintage signs on all the buildings. I'm going to bookmark these and take a little more time examining them

"We're at your disposal!" That's what this family told me- they were interested in anything creative- anything different! Something I appreciated but I felt the pressure was on as dad is a talented artist himself, as well as a published illustrator! But in one regard it was freeing knowing they were willing to do anything- and that included taking their shoes off, sitting on rusty old screens, getting dirty (or at the least not worrying about staying clean) and just having a good time and I hope the images portray what a carefree and fun family they are.
I took the chance of this artistic freedom to shoot a wider angle lens and get some different looks than I usually envision. I love the results.
But I think one of my favorites is the the family pose amongst the portraits dad painted of each family member. I am so glad the took the initiative to bring them along!

While some seniors go on to participate in sports in their college careers, for others these times remain fond memories through out their lives. The Digital Dinosaur

Pressure. Sometimes I think this digital world we're in has just added one more element of pressure to our already over-scheduled lives as mothers. It's not good enough to attend every extra curricular event in your son or daughter's lives, but you must snap 2-3 frames every 30 seconds to document that child's participation. Then- you get home and download 200 pictures of Johnny's Christmas program. The sad thing is, you've now not only missed viewing Johnny's program with your own eyes because you're too busy fiddling with your camera, but now those 50 images sit on your computer never to see the ink of a printer or the pages of a scrapbook.

Enter Facebook- ah- it's great, you can share your snaps with friends and family- every week is a new album, comments, likes...BUT how many of those priceless images have you actually printed to preserve for yourself and your children?

In multiple conversations I've had with people over the last few weeks, the topic of digital files has come up. Things like how their personal computers are filling up with pictures that are never printed, how much time it takes to download and organize images (let along actually get them uploaded and printed). One friend who will go unnamed has yet to print any of her vacation pictures from the past 3= years which at this point would be a pretty hefty hunk of change to drop all at once.

This is the part where I tell you how wonderfully organized I am- how my own treasured personal snap shots are files, organized, stored on multiple media forms and kept in a safe-deposit box for safe keeping. Unfortunately my organization for my personal photos is no better, in fact my second son's scrapbook stops suddenly at about 5 months old- which coincidentally coincides with about the time I started doing portrait photography more seriously. Maybe you too have a few boxes of old negatives stored away in your closet- how many times have YOU pulled one of those negatives out to get a reprint made? If you're like me- about as often as I've been up there to dust off that shelf.

Even sadder is the future of many of those digital images stored on our computers. This photo on Flickr is quite amazing when you think of all the different kinds of storage technology has given us in just a few years. When's the last time you used a 3.5" floppy disc? Even own a computer that will accept one? How much longer before the disc that holds your daughter's baptism photos is obsolete? Think of the pictures that will be lost to not only your immediate family archives, but to future generations that may treasure the images even more than you do. There are labs that no longer offer developing of negatives.

This post is meant to be a kick in the pants to myself and to those of you that are just as guilty as I- whether it's negatives stored in a box in your closet or digital files stored in a folder on your computer, print a few of those pictures! You just never know when technology may fail you. Digital is great--- but there is no substitute for holding a print in your hand or looking at a wall portrait hung on your wall.

Joshua is 3 months old- and after I gave his mother my 'speech' about how it's not typically for 3 month olds to give a lot of smiles during their session, he went and proved me totally wrong and I could barely get a shot with him NOT smiling. He certainly is a happy guy! And with three older brothers to take care of him at home- why wouldn't he be!?

Mady and Chase

I've had the honor of photographing Mady and Chase for several years now. In fact, I was just thinking the first session I did with Chase he was a chubby curly haired baby and one of my favorite images was of him with some bright green apples in a field of grass. Ah, memories. Having those long term relationships with my clients is one of the most satisfactory things about my job. Not only have I met many new people that I otherwise would not have, but made many new friendships as well.

The other advantage from those long term clients comes in the ability to capture 'true' personalities during the session and to be able to interact with the children on a level to get some spontaneous and unique expressions. Before I delved into the realm of photography- I very well remember taking my own daughter to a 'walk in' studio for photos where she was plopped down and tickled with a feather stick and give a shot of her smiling ear to ear for the camera. Was she adorable? Of COURSE- she's my daughter. I'm not so sure that those images, looking back, truly capture her personality at the time though. Not to mention in hindsight I see the flat lighting and color casts and other technical aspects I didn't even know to look for back then.

Mady and Chase's session was outdoors on a windy afternoon, but we didn't let that stop us and the natural beauty of Mady's hair blowing in the wind or Chase's pensive looks just melt my heart. I hope their mom thinks so as well.

Taylor Swift Look-A-Like | SW MN Senior Pictures

Andrea is sweet gal who can really turn it on for the camera. She has one of those personalities that shine. She was a natural and I thought she sure bore a resemblance to Taylor Swift (she had to admit she's been told that before. I have to admit I adore the images.

My poor blog is getting severely neglected. I hope to be able to remedy that - but senior sessions are keeping me hopping and a baby that still won't take a bottle well and doesn't go to daycare fills my days with necessities of daily living and getting editing and ordering done.

It's hard to believe Christmas is coming so rapidly. Just an early reminder- that our studio is CLOSED the month of DECEMBER so all sessions must be completed prior to that. The calendar is already getting busy- so please don't delay in making your appointment. I hate to turn people away but every year the calendar seems to fill up rapidly.

My neglected blog here needs some attention, so here is a peek at Ashley's 6 month session. I'm always honored Ashley's family makes the 80 mile trip to Lakefield for her portraits. I got this can at a yard sale and was waiting for the right chubby baby and willing mom to give it a whirl. Mom and I both love how it turned out! Those little rolls are so cute!

Shannon's posting brings us to the end of the contest. I know I had a fabulous time seeing everyone's creativity in how they display the images they cherish most. From large wall portraits, to groupings, word decals, special creation frames, specialized crops and more...I now have a few more to -do's on my list!

I've been doing Shannon's family portraits for several years. She's added to her brood a few times since we started and I love the way she features her family's and children's portraits in her beautiful home. Shannon has a great eye for scale and knowing when a large print is needed to pull out the look she is going for, or when a grouping of 11 x 14's will set off the wall.

Melinda shares a very unique way that she is displaying her portraits in her home.
After replacing an antique curio in my dining room with this antique buffet, I was in search of something to hang above it as the wall words were already there. Finding this 2' x 4' piece of rusty ceiling tin while out antiquing last fall, I knew it was the perfect fit. We had a family session taken with Alison in October and I then had a friend of ours make the tin into a multi-photo frame. He framed the back with 3/4" pine and rolled the tin around the edges so no wood shows. He then cut in the holes to fit the portraits I had ordered from our session and sprayed the entire piece with an aerosol matte finish sealer to keep any more of the original paint from flaking off. The center photo is 11x14" of our whole family; on the left is an 8X10" of my husband and I; and on the right another 8x10" of our 3 kids. The bottom 4 photos are 5x7" - on the left is my husband with our 2 boys and then he and our daughter next to that. On the right is our daughter and I and next to that our 2 boys and I.

Alison first did our daughter's senior pictures in June 2009. The 12x12" collage on the left is the portrait I decided to hang in our bedroom because I couldn't decide on just one! After our family session in October, adding the photo of the 3 kids completed our bedroom!

I had the luck of visiting Kelsey's home this spring when I did an extended family session for her family in Iowa. She has a beautiful home with a gorgeous view and her flair for decorating is immediately seen upon entering her home. Her living room features a high wall displaying an array of portraits from various sessions. This is a great way to fill a large tall wall~ and you can build on your gallery arrangement as the years past and you acquire more portraits. Her daughter, Gracie's room is a little girl's delight- and the storyboard of her tiny feet from her 3 month session go perfectly with the decor.

Jill has three adorable (and photogenic) children and I've had the honor of doing their family and individual portraits for several years now. Jill has a flair for decorating with portraits and if you ever see the walls and decor in her home, you immediately know what is important to her...FAMILY! Jill is one of those 'on top of it' parents that are diligent in making sure each year her children have an updated portrait session and wall portrait image to display from the session.

Her family photo is a 16x20 and takes a prominent spot by her front door- while some of the other prints are grouped to make attractive wall gallery features. Wall lettering is another creative option to make your portraits really stand out.

Amber shared her creativity in the way she decorates using desk sized portraits~ in a unique scrapbook feel wall hanging featuring her and hubby and new baby. As a mother of four (YES FOUR!) boys now, I just think the 'SON UP TIL SON DOWN" sign goes so perfectly with her the images of her boys getting 'framed'.

The wall portrait over the fireplace features all the boys~ which is a perfect display place for a special portrait.

Here is a wall portrait share of my "fabulous five" nieces and nephews. I have a duplicate of this print hanging in my studio as well. It's a large, specialty crop image. I encourage clients to be creative with their spaces and don't be tied into feeling like you have to get a standard size to go on your wall. That's the great thing about custom photography is that the wall portrait sizes can be customized to fit your space, as well as what crop is best for the particular image. I think you'll agree a long and narrow crop lends itself well to this fun image.

I'll continue to post your images you shared with me thru this week and announce the winners following that. Thank you for the fabulous response. I know people have thoroughly enjoyed seeing what you're all doing with your portraits and I know I've gotten some great ideas myself!

Lisa has a beautiful new home and needed some help filling her wall space. I did an in home consult to help her with ideas of products, sizes and wall gallery arrangements that would work for them. Our studio also did the custom framing for the larger images as well. Lisa loved the result and I do too!

The three images of the boys are a special crop- approx 18x24. The crop fit the wall space well hung side by side with the other two images and gave a more contemporary fresh feel to the space.

The assorted size wall gallery is found in the master bedroom and Lisa loves the black and white images. Another wall portrait went into a nook above the toilet in the Master Bath (who says wall portraits don't belong in a bathroom!?)

The bottom image show three 20x20 prints hung side by side in the rec/exercise area. We chose a gorgeous frame with a slightly burnished style to set off the specialty painting technique found on that wall.

It was a joy to work with Tod and Lisa and her handsome boys! The first time I shot Lisa's children several years ago we got talking and we didn't even realize we were related! How funny is that? Her grandpa and my grandpa were brothers! Sounds like something we would have realized, but when Grandpa had 13 siblings you kind of loose track of things!

Awesome images, Lisa! I hope you treasure them for years to come. I know those boys of yours just keep getting bigger and taller every year!

I was honored to do Thomas and Julia's first professional portraits. Both of these sweeties have had a long and winding road after being born prematurely, but you'd never know it, as they are two of the happiest children you'll ever meet. It warms my heart to see their images of their smiling faces, and I hope the images hung in their home will be a reminder to their mom and dad how much they all have overcome!

Once in a while someone will say to me that they don't want to do portraits because their little one is changing so fast. That's exactly WHY to do portraits! Everyone's family is in a constant state of change and growth, but someday you'll want to remember who you are as a family NOW, and who your child was and their place in your family at this time of your lives. Isn't that what portraits are all about?

Here is what Laura had to say about her pictures:

My pictures of your pictures do not do them justice! Seriously don’t know how to explain to you what these pictures mean to me. I look back at where we started and can’t believe where they are now. They images are sooooooo beautiful!

These are the ones I have hung up right now - need to get frames for the others yet. The 3 picture display can be seen from our living room. Our bedroom is off of the living room and there is a mini-hallway to the bedroom. The pictures on hung on that wall. The frame in the middle of their pictures has this on it ...

"For a long time, there were only our footprints and laughter in our dreams and even from such small things, we knew we could not wait to love you forever."

The other display was hard to take a picture off. The big wall hanging in on the wall in our computer nook and their pictures are part of that. I had to take 2 pictures to get the whole thing.
